Chelsea are more likely to sign Saul Niguez than Manchester United, according to reports. The Atletico Madrid midfielder is being linked with both Premier League sides ahead of August 31, when the transfer window will slam shut. And a move to Stamford Bridge, rather than Old Trafford, appears to be on the cards.

Chelsea are well-stocked in the middle of the park.

Jorginho and N’Golo Kante usually partner up together under Thomas Tuchel, while he also has Matteo Kovacic and Trevoh Chalobah at his disposal too.

But, despite that, Chelsea are still eyeing a late deal for Saul.

The Spain international will be allowed to leave Atletico Madrid behind this summer, with the La Liga giants hoping to balance the books in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

And while United have been linked, the Manchester Evening News say any potential deal for the Red Devils is ‘unlikely’.

Instead, it’s Chelsea who appear to be frontrunners in the race to land the player.

United have previously said any more signings this summer would be a bonus, with Solskjaer saying publicly: “Anything from now is a bonus.

“I have to say that with the two signings we’ve got, we’ve strengthened where we wanted to strengthen.

“Let’s see what happens. You never know in football. Anything can happen, ins and outs.”

But while United have been targeting a midfielder this summer, no more arrivals are said to be expected at Old Trafford.

Part of the reason for their current stance is because they’ve blown most of their transfer budget already.

United spent a massive £73million on Jadon Sancho, with the England international moving from Borussia Dortmund.

And they’ve also spent big on Raphael Varane, too, with the 2018 World Cup winner touching down from Real Madrid.

United have several players they need to get off the wage bill, too, if they’re to sign a midfielder before August 31.

Diogo Dalot has been linked with AC Milan and, though Brandon Williams has joined Norwich City on loan, they’re still open to cutting him loose.

And that’s a similar story with Jesse Lingard, with West Ham still hoping to land him permanently after seeing him dazzle at the London Stadium last term.

Tuchel, meanwhile, recently addressed the possibility of Chelsea signing more players this summer.

The Blues have already landed Romelu Lukaku, who joined from Inter Milan in a massive £98m deal earlier this month.

And he suggested he wasn’t entirely content with the squad he’s got at his disposal.

“I am absolutely happy with our squad and the alternatives we have,” he said.

“It’s not too big a squad, we were missing Christian Pulisic today and that meant everybody else was in the squad.

“That means we maybe don’t have the biggest squad but that we have a very competitive squad in all positions.

“This, on one hand, is necessary because we play a lot of competitions and we play the World Club Cup in December.

“We also played very long last season and there was the Euros and Copa America.

“So if we want to compete we need this level. But at the same time, it’s also important we’re a strong group, this was maybe the key for the last half a year. We played with a strong bond and a great team spirit.

“This is a challenge for the team and for me to create this atmosphere again. And that everybody is ready to take hard decisions and keep pushing the team.

“If we do this we can achieve more than we have.”
