Chelsea are weighing up the idea of including Edouard Mendy in a potential swap deal offer in exchange for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to reports. The Blues are said to be in the market for a new option between the sticks to replace Mendy, who excelled as Chelsea won the Champions League two years ago but has since tumbled down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
Mendy remains tied down in west London until the summer of 2025 but has recently been in talks over a new and improved deal, although an agreement is yet to be reached as things stand. His long-term future at Chelsea is thought to be uncertain as a result, leading to speculation that he could be shipped out when the transfer window re-opens at the end of the campaign.
It seems as though a summer exit for Mendy is a genuine possibility ahead of next season, with Chelsea mulling over whether to include the Senegalese goalkeeper as part of a swap offer for Onana later this year. That’s according to InterLive.it, who are reporting that Onana’s recent performances in Italy have attracted the interest of Chelsea and several other clubs from across Europe.
Some teams are said to be willing to pay around £35million in exchange for Onana, but Chelsea are hoping that a part-exchange deal will be successful if Mendy is the player involved. The Blues value their second-choice stopper at around £22m, which suggests that his presence in any potential swap could reduce the transfer fee required to bring Onana to Stamford Bridge to around £13m.

However, it is said that Inter are unlikely to be keen on a player-plus-cash deal and would rather sell Onana for a ‘large sum of money’, while they also have internal reservations about the possibility of signing Mendy to replace the former Ajax man next season. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will eventually be able to secure an agreement with Inter, though, if they manage to find a breakthrough in discussions over the coming weeks and months.
Chelsea have long been credited with a desire to land Onana, who turned plenty of heads with his form at Ajax before joining Inter on a free transfer last summer. He has since emerged as their first-choice goalkeeper thanks to a string of fine performances, which have seen him keep 14 clean sheets from 27 appearances in all competitions since the beginning of the season.

Meanwhile, it seems as though Mendy’s days at Chelsea could be numbered regardless of any potential involvement in a swap deal for Onana, with the 31-year-old having played a back-up role to Kepa Arrizabalaga for the vast majority of the campaign to date. His contract situation also seems to be complicating things at Stamford Bridge, although Potter recently hinted that he would like to keep Mendy at the club for the foreseeable future.
“It’s not my place to speak publicly about players’ contract situations, that’s between them and the club,” said the Chelsea boss when quizzed on the topic back in December. “Mendy has been absolutely top with the club and with me, he’s a great guy, happy around the place.”
