Chelsea have sacked Thomas Tuchel following their Champions League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

The Blues spent big in the summer but have endured a difficult start to the season, with only three wins from their opening six games in the Premier League. New owner Todd Boehly, who purchased the club from Roman Abramovich in the summer, decided enough is enough after watching Chelsea limp to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in their opening Champions League group game on Tuesday evening.

The club confirmed the surprise news in a statement on their official website on Wednesday morning. It read: " On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.

"Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.

"As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.

"Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the Club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach. There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made."

Chelsea and Boehly backed Tuchel in the summer, allowing him to spend over £250million in the transfer market. The German coach brought in Wesley Fofana little under a week ago for around £72million, plus Marc Cucurella for £58million and Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for £50million.

He also signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who made his Blues debut against Zagreb in Croatia, and was allowed to loan out Romelu Lukaku, who cost the club £97.5million from Inter Milan last summer.

But after being backed off the pitch, Tuchel has been unable to deliver results on it at the start of this season, with their abject defeat to Dinamo Zagreb proving to be the straw that broke the camel's back.
