Premier League leaders Chelsea have been warned they are lacking something that both Manchester City and Liverpool have as the three-way title race gathers pace. The Blues currently sit top on 33 points, having lost just one game, with City second on 32 points and Liverpool third on 31 points.

It is developing into a mouth-watering battle, with Thomas Tuchel hoping to guide Chelsea to their first title since Antonio Conte was in charge.

All three of the title rivals won their midweek matches, with the Blues defeating Watford, City seeing off Aston Villa and Liverpool hammering Everton.

That ensured the trio remain finely placed heading into the busy festive schedule, with the Blues holding a slender advantage.

That advantage came close to evaporating on Wednesday when Tuchel took his side to Vicarage Road to face Watford.

The Blues boss made six changes to his team, but that had a negative impact, with the visitors lacklustre for much of the clash.

Goals from Mason Mount and Hakim Ziyech ultimately downed the feisty Hornets, but it was far from the dominant display expected of league leaders.

Tuchel has now made 50 changes to his team over the course of the campaign, suggesting he has not yet settled on a favoured starting line-up.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp meanwhile clearly have their preferred teams, allowing City and Liverpool to be far more settled.

And Reds icon Michael Owen believes that Tuchel’s tinkering puts Chelsea at a disadvantage in the title race.

“This is an exceptional season and I’m convinced it will go to the wire. The results of the top three already, they don’t seem to be slipping up,” Owen told Premier League Productions.

“I do think the starting XI of Liverpool and Man City are stronger than Chelsea, but Chelsea have got a great manager and a great squad.

“It could go any way but I’ll stick my pick on Liverpool.”

Owen also predicted that the battle to lift the Premier League will go right down to the final day of the season.

“I think it’s very difficult to predict. I couldn’t argue with anybody if they said one of those three will win it,” he added.

“I think this title race will go all the way until May. I think all three of them will still have a chance of winning it in May.

“I think these are the best three sides we’ve seen for a long, long time. We’ve seen sides, City have been great.

“Liverpool have been great in the last few seasons, but we’ve never seen three teams of this standard at once in the Premier League.”
