Chelsea have now set their sights on another central midfielder and a centre-back after completing the club-record signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for £97.5million. The Blues have broken the bank to bring the Belgian back to west London and there is a sense of unfinished business when the striker is concerned.

He left Chelsea on a permanent deal in the summer of 2014 to join Everton following a successful loan spell at Goodison Park but now he’s out to set the record straight at Stamford Bridge.

Yet Thomas Tuchel does not want to stop just yet and the club are looking to recruit up to two more new faces before August 31.

That could hinge on sales though and there are a number of players that Chelsea need to sell to free up some funds and the wage bill.

Those include the likes of Ross Barkley, Davide Zappacosta, Michy Batshuayi, Kenedy, Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Baba Rahman.

Kurt Zouma, Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek could also be heading towards the exit door permitting suitable offers arrive.

Chelsea already have a clear idea of who they would like to bring and according to The Athletic, Declan Rice, Aurelien Tchouameni and Jules Kounde are the current names on the club’s shortlist.

Kounde is deemed to be the priority with Chelsea currently on the lookout for another defender.

However, Trevoh Chalobah’s impressive performance in the Super Cup final win over Villarreal has certainly given Tuchel food for thought.

Chelsea had presented the idea of a player-plus-cash deal involving Zouma for Kounde but Sevilla said no, causing negotiations to stall.

Now Chalobah could be the solution for the Blues and Tuchel said in Belfast: “Absolutely that’s why he played,” when quizzed if the former Lorient loanee was in his plans.

“He played good against Arsenal and he played a good game also against Bournemouth, then Arsenal, then Tottenham. We wanted to have guys on the field who are capable to play 90 minutes.

“Trevoh was first in training the very first in training and is physically strong and deserved to play by his performances so far and again today he was very strong.

“We still have some days to decide his personal future but in the moment he shows his value to the team.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea have cooled their interest in Rice since Frank Lampard left the club but he is still well and truly on their radar.

Former Chelsea favourite Cesc Fabregas, who currently plays alongside Tchouameni in midfield for Monaco, has already made it clear the Frenchman is a special talent.

“He has the potential to be the complete midfielder. He’s a modern midfield player,” Fabregas said.
