CHRIS SUTTON: Sergio Aguero was Manchester City’s star of the last decade… now Erling Haaland can be the next one for Pep Guardiola’s side
- Manchester City have confirmed that Sergio Aguero will leave at end of season
- While I am sad to see him go, I am excited at who his replacement could be
- It seems a harsh decision, but Pep Guardiola never shies away from big call
- Erling Haaland is well capable of taking over from Aguero as City’s star
With the sadness that Sergio Aguero is leaving Manchester City comes excitement at the thought of who might be signed to replace him.
You have to think manager Pep Guardiola has a plan. Do City soften the blow by bringing in Erling Haaland? Wouldn’t that be something!
When the Aguero news broke, I found myself wondering whose decision this was.
Now that Sergio Aguero is leaving, Erling Haaland could be Manchester City’s next star
If it was Guardiola’s, figuring that Aguero is surplus to requirements at City, can we criticise him for it? He’s about to win another Premier League title and his ruthless nature has always served him well.
Never forget that after taking over at Barcelona in 2008, he announced immediately that Ronaldinho, Deco and Samuel Eto’o weren’t in his plans.
Then he went and won the Treble in his first season!
Guardiola isn’t one to shy away from making big decisions. He backs himself to come out on the other side a winner.
Decision to allow Aguero to leave is harsh, but Pep Guardiola never shies away from big call
I’m sure Aguero will understand that this is the business of football. Strikers get older, competition gets fierce and everybody’s career has to come to an end some time.
Aguero will no doubt enjoy a couple more goal-laden seasons before finally calling it a day. They just won’t be with City.
