Christian Pulisic was taken to hospital after taking a knee to his private parts during USA’s World Cup clash with Iran on Tuesday night. The Chelsea forward scored the only goal of the game as his country booked their place in the World Cup knockout stages.

USA began the evening behind England and Iran in Group B and needed to win their final group game to have any chance of reaching the last 16. And they dominated the first half as Timothy Weah squandered two good opportunities.

But USA finally got their breakthrough after 38 minutes as AC Milan right-back Sergino Dest headed the ball across goal and Pulisic turned it into the back of the net. The goal proved to be a painful experience for Pulisic, however, as he collided with Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand as the ball hit the back of the net. And the Premier League star was left writhing in agony on the floor.

Pulisic needed treatment on the pitch for several minutes and was eventually forced off at the interval after Weah had had a second effort ruled out for offside. But USA managed to hold onto their lead after the break to secure a last 16 clash with the Netherlands after finishing second in Group B.

Pulisic’s injury clearly caused him huge discomfort and he was subsequently forced to go to hospital to have further medical intervention. And he then took to Instagram to post a picture of himself from his hospital bed alongside the caption: “So f****** proud of my guys. I’ll be ready Saturday, don’t worry.”

USA midfielder Weston McKennie was quick to pay tribute to Pulisic after the match as he told reporters: “We’re very thankful that he put his body there. But we have 25 other guys who would do the same thing.” And manager Gregg Berhalter added: “I can’t say enough [good things] about Christian.”

Despite failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, USA have reached the round of 16 at their last three tournaments. In 2010 they were eventually knocked out by Ghana after extra time, with Belgium also needing an extra 30 minutes to get the better of them in 2014.

USA’s World Cup record has been impressive in recent times and the country have only lost one of their last 11 matches in 90 minutes during the tournaments in South Africa, Brazil and Qatar. So they could well pose the Netherlands huge problems in their last 16 showdown on Saturday afternoon.
