Manchester United host Aston Villa in one of two early Premier League kick-offs this afternoon and will be looking to build on their unbeaten start to the new top-flight campaign. United have picked up four wins in their opening five games and are level on points with Chelsea and Liverpool at the top of the table.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side thumped Leeds United 5-1 on the opening day of the season, before being frustrated in a 1-1 draw with Southampton.

The Red Devils then battled to a 1-0 victory at Wolves before Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the club for his second spell.

Ronaldo fired United to a 4-1 win over Newcastle United on his second debut as he notched a brace.

And the Portugal international got himself on the scoresheet once again last weekend as Man Utd defeated West Ham 2-1 at the London Stadium.

Ronaldo has been in fine form since departing Juventus last month to move back to Old Trafford.

The 36-year-old also scored in United’s Champions League defeat to Young Boys and will line-up against Villa today in search of a record-equalling feat.

If Ronaldo finds the back of the net this afternoon, he will become the first player to score in his first four appearances for the club since James Hanson did exactly that back in 1924.

It is of course the second time Ronaldo has had the chance to equal the record after originally moving to the club from Sporting Lisbon in 2003.

In his opening four games for United during his first spell, the teenage Ronaldo didn’t register any goals, although he only started one of those matches.

Hanson’s record has stood for 97 years but was nearly equalled by former striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgium international scored in his first three games for Man Utd as he struck on his debut in a UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid before scoring in the Premier League against West Ham and Swansea.

And he had the chance to score in his fourth match when he stepped up to take a penalty against Leicester City.

But Kasper Schmeichel saved the spot kick and kept Lukaku at bay for the full 90 minutes.

Extraordinarily, that game against Leicester was the only encounter in which Lukaku failed to score in his first 10 appearances for United.

The powerhouse forward found the back of the net an incredible 11 times in his first 10 outings.

Ronaldo is a man for records. He is the highest goalscorer at international level thanks to his 111 strikes for Portugal and has more Champions League goals than any other player, with 135.

And, there is no doubt he will be looking to rise to his latest challenge when Villa visit Old Trafford.
