Danny Mills has linked Everton fans to the brutal treatment of Liverpool supporters by French police during the Champions League final.
Liverpool supporters travelling to the Stade de France ahead of last month's final were met with shocking violence by Parisian police. They were kept waiting for hours in a compact space before being tear gassed and pepper sprayed unjustly.
UEFA have since apologised ahead of an investigation being launched, but former England full-back Mills claimed the behaviour of English football fans in the latter stage of the season provoked the French police to react aggressively – a claim that has sparked fury among both Everton and Liverpool supporters online.
Mills pointed toward a Goodison Park pitch invasion following Everton's 3-2 win over Crystal Palace on May 19 as a reason for the brutality. He told Football Insider: "People say English fans are judged unfairly and it's premeditated. I don't think we are, in all honesty. You have to go through the past 20, 30 years and look at how our fans have behaved when travelling abroad in this country.
"Let's remember just before the end of the season there were fans on the pitch and a French hero, legend, God in Patrick Vieira was abused and almost attacked by fans. This is a guy who is so well regarded in France for what he’s achieved in football it's unbelievable.
"You don't think the French police looked at that and thought 'Look what the English are doing to one of our heroes?'

"Can you imagine if Frank Lampard or Stevie Gerrard was managing PSG and that happened then a French team was coming over to England and how the media would perceive that saying 'Look at the hooliganism, the disgraceful scenes'."
Everton fans have unsurprisingly been left baffled and shocked by Mills' claim, taking to Twitter to vent their anger at the former Leeds United man for shifting the blame.
One Evertonian remarked: "So French cops/ govt and uefa admit CL shambles was down to them but Danny Mills insists Everton fans are to blame."
Liverpool fans also joined in condemning Mills' comments, with one tweeting: "What went wrong in Paris is to do with UEFA, the French Authorities and the French Police. Liverpool and Real Madrid were nothing to do with it so to bringing Everton into it is obnoxious in the extreme."
Other supporters commented "it's a terrible shout by him" and "this is ridiculous".
Meanwhile, one Blue poked fun at the article referring to Mills as an "expert", stating: "I'd love to know on what planet Danny Mills is an expert in anything, cos it's defo not on earth."
