England manager Gareth Southgate has made an effort to make his faith in Manchester United captain Harry Maguire known ahead of the 2022 World Cup. Maguire was widely an unpopular name in Southgate’s 26-man squad amid his struggles at club level, but he looks set to play a major role in Qatar.

According to Mirror Sport, Southgate has set up his own’ support line’ for the 29-year-old ahead of the winter tournament. The Three Lions boss has taken the time to boost his confidence with regular check-ups, more so than with other squad members.

Maguire has started just one Premier League game since United’s 4-0 defeat at Brentford in the second outing of the season, falling out of favour under Erik ten Hag. But his Old Trafford woes aren’t expected to impact Southgate’s trust in him to deliver on the big stage for his country again.

The England No 6 was at the core of the 2018 World Cup semi-final run and was just as crucial last summer as Southgate led his side to the Euro 2020 final. He topped off a widely-hailed individual tournament by holding his nerve in the decisive penalty shoot-out against Italy.

And the report adds Southgate has made it clear to the now-under-fire centre-back that he values him so highly that he wouldn’t hesitate to hand him the captain’s armband if Harry Kane wasn’t on the pitch. Maguire is part of England’s leadership group alongside the likes of Kane, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling.

Southgate’s undeniable faith in Maguire indicates he will start England’s Group B opener against Iran on Monday, November 21. And he will hope the World Cup can be a launchpad for a more successful second half of the season with United.

Maguire has won 48 caps for England and has been a mainstay under the Southgate regime. But his inclusion in the World Cup squad was scoffed at, especially in the absence of high performers like Fikayo Tomori and Chris Smalling.

It’s no understatement to suggest the former Hull City and Leicester City star is fighting for his United career, with Ten Hag reportedly ready to cash in on him to fund the next stage of his Old Trafford rebuild. The Qatar World Cup feels make or break for England, Southgate and Maguire.
