England's Women have shown Gareth Southgate's men "how it's done" after smashing Norway 8-0 in the pair's Euro 2022 group stage encounter.

The Lionesses ran riot at Brighton's AMEX Stadium putting six past their opponents in the opening 45 minutes. Georgia Stanway emphatically converted from the spot to open the scoring with a mere 12 minutes on the clock before Lauren Hemp bundled home a second just four minutes later.

Ellen White and Beth Mead then bagged a brace apiece before the interval as Sarina Wiegman's side cruised towards qualification for the competition's quarter-finals, while breaking the record for the biggest ever Euros win in Women's football history thanks to a second half header from Alessia Russo and Mead completing her hat-trick. As the Lionesses ravaged the Norwegian opposition, English football fans were all saying the same thing as they sent Southgate a stern message.

A third wrote: "Oh this is absolutely incredible to watch from England Women. Hey Southgate, this is how you put the ball in the net #England #EURO2022 @Lionesses."

While England's Women made easy work of Norway on Monday night, days after edging out Austria 1-0 in the Euro 2022 opener, Southgate's men have struggled in recent times – just one year on from reaching the Euro 2020 final. Last month, the Three Lions scored one solitary goal in four games as their latest Nations League campaign got off to a disastrous start.

Bookended by humiliating 1-0 and 4-0 defeats to Hungary, Southgate's side drew 1-1 with Germany and a played out a drab goalless draw with European champions Italy as relegation from the Nations League emerged as a real possibility. While optimism under Southgate is at an all-time low ahead of the Qatar World Cup later in the year, football fans were delighted to see Wiegman's side give them something to cheer about.

After equalling the record for most goals scored by a single team at a Women's European Championship in the first half alone, Russo and Mead then saw new standards set. Twelve months of the men's Euro 2020 heartbreak, football may well be coming home after all.
