Manchester United transfer target Christian Eriksen has admitted he would “love” to play in the Champions League next season.
United have made an official approach to Eriksen, who they hope to sign on a free transfer when his current Brentford contract expires at the end of the month, according toThe Athletic. Eriksen also has an offer from Brentford, who are desperate to keep him following an impressive half-season, while Tottenham are also keen on bringing their former player back to the club.
The 30-year-old signed a short-term deal with the Bees in January and turned in some extremely impressive performance, helping Thomas Frank’s side win seven of the 11 games he started in the Premier League. Those displays have attracted attention from multiple clubs – but United could be snubbed due to the fact they can’t offer Champions League football.
“I have different offers and options, which we are considering, and then we make a decision,” Eriksen told Viaplay recently. “I would love to play Champions League football again. I know how much fun it is, but it isn’t essential for me.”
United will be playing in the Europa League under Erik ten Hag next season after finishing sixth in the Premier League under Ralf Rangnick. Ten Hag knows Eriksen personally, having seen him up close when the Dane trained with Ajax’s reserves in a bid to regain sharpness before joining Brentford last season.
But that personal relationship may not be enough to lure him to Old Trafford, with others offering a higher level of competition. Tottenham are understood to be keen to bring Eriksen back to the club he played for between 2013 and 2020.

Spurs finished fourth last season and will play in the Champions League under Antonio Conte in the 2022/23 campaign. They have already shown ambition in the transfer window, signing Fraser Forster from Southampton and Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan, while a £25million bid has also been accepted by Brighton for Yves Bissouma.
United, meanwhile, are desperate for midfielders, with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all leaving the club at the end of June. Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong remains their priority transfer target, but the Catalan club are playing hard ball over the fee.
According toESPN , Barcelona are insisting on a fee of £86m (€100m) for De Jong’s signature. United are currently sticking to their valuation of around £52m (€60m) with add-ons for the 25-year-old midfielder, who worked with Ten Hag at Ajax before making a move to Barca in January 2019 for a fee of £65m plus a further £9.5m in add-ons.
