Everton fans furious as Mitrovic avoids red card for risky studs up challenge

Everton fans were left furious that Aleksandar Mitrovic avoided a red card in their clash with Fulham on Saturday evening.

Mitrovic was late to the ball when he challenge Idrissa Gana Gueye – leaving his studs up on the Everton man. However, John Brooks only flashed a yellow to the big Serbian, while VAR also decided the challenge wasn't worthy of a red.

And Everton fans have taken to social media to fume about the decision. With many suggesting the Serbian frontman should have been given his marching orders following the challenge that left Gueye on the floor in agony.

One fan fumed: "Because it’s against Everton. The other way around and it’s a red no question. Even Souness and Jimmy Floyd were unanimous in their view it’s a red."

"Studs up, reckless lunge and potential ankle breaker. Clear red right..? Can someone with better knowledge explain that? Doesn’t help when we haven’t had a red go our way in a long time either," a second fumed. While a third said: "What’s the point in VAR. It's a red all day."

A fourth added: "Mitrovic should be off. The more you watch the replay the more of a red it looks."

The tackle was checked by Darren England – who was leading up the VAR team – but he decided not to advise Brooks to go over to the monitor.

It's believed this is because the challenge wasn't high, with Gueye stretching for the ball, and it came from close proximity.
