West Ham defender Fabian Balbuena was sent off by referee Chris Kavanagh against Chelsea on Saturday after he caught Ben Chilwell while clearing a ball down the line.
Although there didn’t appear to be any intent, the studs of the 29-year-old connected with the calf of his opponent while the ball was sent down the pitch.
Although David Moyes had already watched his side fall behind to Timo Werner, they were given little chance of a reprieve with 10 men for the remaining 10 minutes.
The response has been a lively one on Twitter, with the likes of Gary Lineker and Andros Townsend questioning how that verdict was reached after several checks.
One Twitter user wrote: “The games gone he just kicked the ball.”
A second said: “That is honestly worse than the Tomas Soucek red card. Absolutely disgraceful decision.”
With a third adding: “The VAR decision for Balbuena to be sent off would be comical even at Sunday League level. Absolutely ridiculously poor decision. Disgrace of a review system.”
A fourth continued: “The Premier league keep finding exciting new ways to test my resolve as a fan, what what absolute joke.”
Crystal Palace forward Andros Townsend then added his thoughts by saying: “I can’t believe it….. I’ve just witnessed a man get sent off by clearing the ball…. this has to stop….. THE GAMES GONE.”
With Gary Lineker writing: “Oh FFS, that is not a red card. He’s just clearing the ball. Ridiculous.”
Before adding: “How can VAR and the referee get it so wrong? It’s just baffling. Utterly baffling.”

Moyes told Sky Sports after the match: "I can only say it’s someone who’s never played the game who’s made the decision. Where’s he meant to put his foot?
"There was a similar incident with Coufal on Rudiger.
"That would have at least merited a yellow if the first one was a red. I think we’ve had a day where the refereeing has been really poor.
"Was it a clear and obvious error that the referee missed? It was a really poor decision because we were in the ascendancy at that time."
