Fans sure Ronaldo-led Man City would have finally won Champions League

Football fans are incensed that Manchester City would have finally ended their Champions League hoodoo had they signed Cristiano Ronaldo last summer.

The Portuguese icon, 37, has almost certainly played his final game for rivals Manchester United after publicly shaming the club in a two-part interview with Talk TV host Piers Morgan. Hitting out at United officials for "betraying" him, Ronaldo also claims he has "no respect" for Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag, who has started Ronaldo on just five occasions in the Premier League this season.

In an interview that has shocked the footballing world, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner further revealed he was "close" to joining the blue half of Manchester in the summer of 2021, only to receive a phone call from ex-manager Sir Alex Ferguson which directed him back to United.

"Well, honestly, it was close," Ronaldo told Morgan. "They spoke a lot and Guardiola said two weeks ago that they tried hard to have me.

"But, as you know, my history is in Manchester United. Your heart, you're feeling the way you did before, and it made the difference.

"And of course, as well, Sir Alex Ferguson. It was a conscious decision because the heart speaks loud in that moment. I think it [speaking with Ferguson] was the key. I wouldn't say that Manchester City wasn't close."

Despite Ronaldo's claim, City have strongly rebuffed they were "close" to signing Portugal's record goalscorer but that hasn't stopped fans from claiming he would've ended their search for a first Champions League title.

"I think it's safe to say if Cristiano Ronaldo had gone to Man City, he'd have scored about 40/50 goals, City would have won the Champions League and EPL comfortably," posted one fan.

"Man City with Ronaldo last season would have won the champions league and Pep knows that," hailed a second. "Ronaldo had an opportunity to join City but chose to be loyal to an old man, good. Would have won the Champions League with City," harked a third.

A fourth fan crunched the numbers to explain why Ronaldo would've led City to glory, stating: " Premier League goals last season: 18 – Cristiano Ronaldo 15 – Man City Top Scorer (KDB) Champions League goals last season: 7 – Man City Top Scorer (Mahrez in 12 games) 6 – Cristiano Ronaldo in 7 games Manchester City bottled the chance of a lifetime!"

While one Man Utd says it was worth the heartbreak to prevent Pep Guardiola's from getting their hands on the 'big ears' trophy, commenting: "If Ronaldo goes to man city he probably wins them the champions league last season especially converting a few against Madrid. That scenario hurts way more than this actual nonsense. It's fine, we had to sign him. Let him go now."
