Fans think Cristiano Ronaldo was waving goodbye in Old Trafford lap of honour

Cristiano Ronaldo left fans thinking he is leaving Manchester United after waving to the Old Trafford crowd during a lap of honour.

The United squad completed the customary end of season walk around the pitch after beating Brentford 3-0 in their final home game. As Ronaldo neared the tunnel he was seen not only clapping, but also waving to those who had stayed behind, which some supporters took as a goodbye message.

One fan tweeted: "Yooo Cristiano Ronaldo is clapping and waving a goodbye." A second post read: "Unrelated, but this seems like a goodbye from Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford."

"Cristiano Ronaldo at full-time. This looks like a farewell goodbye to Old Trafford," claimed one supporter. "That better not be Ronaldo’s goodbye man, need one more season at least," pleaded one.

Another downbeat fan wrote: "Ronaldo's reaction post game waving crowd seems like probably was his last game at old trafford." However, Ronaldo was also spotted appearing to send a different message through the Sky Sports cameras.

The 37-year-old was being closely followed while he was completing the lap and at one point turned to look at the camera operator before speaking. What he said is unclear, with some taking it as "I'm not finished".

That gave hope to those who want to see him stay for the second year of his contract. But others theorised that he was urging "come on, finish".

Reports have linked Ronaldo with a summer exit after a nightmare season for the club which will once again end trophyless and, barring a miracle, without Champions League qualification. Real Madrid are reportedly keen on a sensational summer reunion.

The imminent arrival of new boss Erik ten Hag should offer a fresh start for the football icon, but the Dutchman may yet decide he doesn't feature in his plans. And with his legendary career nearing an end, Ronaldo will be wanting to make the most of the time he has left.
