Frank Lampard slammed for lack of Chelsea plan after summer transfer spree

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been criticised for not knowing his best line-up at Stamford Bridge, despite ensuring the club's transfer business was all wrapped early doors this summer.

The Blues spent over £250m bringing in a host of new arrivals with the aim of challenging for the Premier League title.

But the start of the season has been mixed, with a disappointing draw to West Brom and a Carabao Cup exit to London rivals Tottenham.

Edouard Mendy has replaced Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal, Thiago Silva has joined the backline, Kai Havertz is attempting to prove his worth as a playmaker, while Timo Werner looks for his first goal in the Premier League.

However, ESPN pundit and former Arsenal star Stewart Robson thinks Lampard doesn't have a plan to fit all his new additions in.

“Everyone talks about buying loads of players and making sure your squad is big, getting players in all in one go and doing it early,” he said.

“But if you don’t then get them to gel, you’ve got a problem.

“I thought in their first few games, Chelsea had slight problems. We saw that against West Brom when they couldn’t defend.

“We saw that in the first couple of games with Spurs, but Spurs now seem to have got their act together, they’ve got an understanding of how to play.

“That would be my one criticism of Chelsea.

“I’m not sure that when Frank Lampard bought those players in, knew how he wanted to play and what his best team was.

“I’m still not sure he knows what his best team is.”
