‘Why would he not be in?’: Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher insist James Maddison MUST be part of England’s World Cup squad after sensational two-goal performance in Leicester’s win over Nottingham Forest
- James Maddison produced a scintillating performance for Leicester on Monday
- He scored twice and assisted once during Leicester’s 4-0 win over Forest
- Maddison has had as many goal involvements as Kevin de Bruyne this season, 14
- Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville want him to be at the World Cup with England
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have backed James Maddison to make England’s 26-man World Cup squad following the Leicester playmaker’s sensational two-goal performance in Monday’s 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Maddison opened the scoring in the East Midlands derby with a deflected shot, before grabbing his second 10 minutes before half-time as his free-kick from 25 yards out was smashed past a helpless Dean Henderson.
The 25-year-old assisted Patson Datka with an inch-perfect cross in the 73rd minute prior to his standing ovation withdrawal moments later.

Covering the match on Monday Night Football, former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville and legendary Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher both urged England manager Gareth Southgate to put take Maddison to the Qatar World Cup.
‘Gareth Southgate is big on set pieces and there are a lot of players but looking at the numbers why would he not be in a 26 man squad? I’ve never seen anything but good personality and good character,’ said Neville.
‘What is the reason he wouldn’t be in? It’s not a case of having him over others. A manager will go to the WC with the system but he has to think he might have to change.
‘There has to be a plan B and if you need a could from a set piece you have other players on the bench and he is in the best form.
Maddison has had 14 goal involvements in the Premier League so far this season for Leicester
‘I don’t know any England manager more that has picked players more on form,’ he said.
Carragher echoed similar sentiments as he stated Maddison’s performances this season means he has to be selected for the winter tournament.
‘You can pick a squad of 26 now. There must be a place for him,’ insisted Carragher.

‘He’s analysing his goals, he gives us answers, he’s a breath of fresh air, we don’t ask for something to create headlines, just be genuine and give insight!
‘He’s a football man, it’s refreshing and I wish more players were like it. Don’t be afraid. Whether he’s an England star or puts us out of work!’ he added.
Maddison’s goal involvements during Leicester’s first win of the season saw him go level with Man City’s Kevin de Bruyne for goal involvements this season, 14, just three behind City hotshot Erling Haaland.
The 25-year-old is making a strong case to be part of England’s Qatar World Cup squad
The Leicester star hasn’t featured for the Three Lions since their 2019 European qualifier victory over Montenegro with Southgate instead preferring other attacking talent.
But with stunning performances in a largely struggling Leicester side, Maddison is making a strong case to join England in the Middle East at the World Cup in November.
