Gary Neville does not expect Cristiano Ronaldo to replace Harry Maguire as Manchester United captain despite his emotional return to the club this week.
Ronaldo, 36, has secured a £20million move back to United 12 years after departing to join Real Madrid, calling time on his stay at Juventus to pen a two-year deal with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.
The Portugal captain has cemented a legacy as one of the greatest players of all time since waving goodbye to Old Trafford in 2009, winning another four Ballon d'Ors and as many Champions Leagues at Madrid before heading to Juve.
Now he is a Red Devils player once more after snubbing interest from neighbours Manchester City to re-sign for the club, a move which boosts their chances of winning the Premier League title this season.
However, despite his vast experience and lofty stature in world football, Neville insists Ronaldo should not replace Maguire as captain at Old Trafford.
"I'd be very surprised if Harry Maguire gets the captaincy taken off him," the former United right-back said on Sky Sports.
"I think Harry Maguire is going to be there for the long term, Cristiano is coming in for two years.

"So I don't think that's going to happen, I'd be very surprised if that was the case. I think Cristiano Ronaldo's desire and leadership skills don't have to be brought forward by having the armband.
"I mean it's obviously something I think he likes, that personal accolade, I think he likes the idea of being the leader of the dressing room.

"But I think he also recognises the team I think, and taking the captaincy off of someone, I don't feel would be the right move."
Ronaldo is set to make his second United debut when they take on Newcastle at Old Trafford after this week's international break.
Neville believes he could be deployed on the wing to accommodate Edinson Cavani upfront, saying: "Obviously the question would be – I love Cavani – so it will be a question as to whether they play either or, or whether they can both play together somehow.
Man Utd stars found Cristiano Ronaldo "so frustrating" in first Old Trafford spell
"Including myself, everyone is thinking that Cristiano is going to play No9, but could he play just to the left of Cavani?
"And then [Mason] Greenwood or [Jadon] Sancho to the right, which I just think would be a guarantee of goals."
