Gary Neville slams Manchester United captain Harry Maguire over England red card

Gary Neville slammed Manchester United captain Harry Maguire after he was sent off during England’s clash against Denmark.

Maguire was shown two yellow cards for late challenges in the first-half of the Nations League fixture at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Man United spent £80m on Maguire in the summer of 2019 but the centre-back has made a poor start to the new season and was widely criticised after the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham before the international break.

After Maguire was sent off just 31 minutes into England’s clash against Denmark, Neville said: ‘That sums up his last 4-6 weeks.

‘It’s been a terrible time for him. I thought he was lucky with the first challenge, that was a bad tackle.

‘It’s just scruffy play from him. It’s really slack. He makes two mistakes [with the second yellow]. It’s rash and then the follow through is bad.

‘During the Tottenham defeat, you felt Maguire needed the international break, but it hasn’t served him well and he’s going back to Man United in as bad a place as he left.’

Former England star Jamie Redknapp added to Sky Sports: ‘It’s just panic [from Maguire]. It looks a really nasty one.

‘He gets the ball but it’s the follow through. I feel sorry for him.

‘It would be easy for us to rip him apart but he’s having a really bad moment in his career.

‘He needs to pull himself together because that’s a player really lacking confidence.

‘There’s a lot going on with him but you can see he’s really struggling at the moment.’

Denmark were awarded a controversial penalty shortly after Maguire’s dismissal and former Tottenham star Christian Eriksen converted to give the visitors the lead.
