Ryan Giggs has broken his silence after finding out that he will face a re-trial over allegations he assaulted his ex-partner, Kate Greville.

In a statement, responding to the judge's decision, he said: "After more than three weeks in court I am obviously disappointed that a retrial has been ordered.

"My not guilty plea remains in relation to all charges. I am confident that justice will eventually be done and my name will be cleared of all the allegations. I would like to thank my legal team, my mum, my children, my girlfriend Zara, as well as my closest friends, for their support throughout this period.

"I understand the level of interest and the scrutiny around this case, but I would like to ask that my and my family's privacy is respected in the weeks and months ahead."

Judge Hilary Manley ordered on Wednesday he stand trial for a second time at Manchester Crown Court after a jury failed to reach verdicts last week following a four-week trial.

Peter Wright QC, prosecuting, told Judge Hilary Manley: "We do seek a re-trial in respect of Mr Giggs.

"The matter has been considered at a senior level within the Crown Prosecution Service and also the willingness of the complainant to give evidence, although that is not determinative on the matter, has also been canvassed.

"They indicate a preparedness to do so. Consequently we do invite you to fix a date for the re-trial of this matter."

Giggs is accused of headbutting Ms Greville and elbowing her younger sister Emma during a row at the couple’s home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, in November 2020.

He was also accused of being in a controlling and coercive relationship with Ms Greville, who he met in 2013 when she started working as a PR on his Cafe Football business with Gary Neville.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Giggs stood down from his role as Wales manager before the trial, which began in August. Before then, he won numerous titles at Manchester United as a player.
