Holland boss De Boer opens up on Donny van de Beek’s difficulties at Man Utd

Holland boss Frank De Boer is keen to boost the confidence of Donny van de Beek.

The former Ajax midfielder has not been handed regular starts since joining Manchester United in the summer, despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisting that he has a big part to play on his arrival.

The 23-year-old is yet to start in the Premier League despite scoring on his debut off the bench against Crystal Palace in September – much to the disappointment of De Boer.

Having said that, the former Inter Milan boss is aware of Solskjaer’s dilemma.

De Boer said ahead of the international break: “Of course I try to give him as much confidence as possible.

"I also showed that by letting him play against Italy. He did a pretty nice job.

"He is also doing well at Manchester United, but they have a fantastic midfield.

“That’s difficult too, but Donny will still get to play enough.

"Of course he wants more, but you also have to get used to a different competition.

"He will experience that too, let’s hope he will eventually get game minutes. In any case, he is equipped, so we can use him well.”

Solskjaer said of his new player in late October: "It says a lot about our depth of quality that we don't have to use him in every game, it says it all about our ambitions.

"It's nice for some players and commentators to have a little go. I know you're short on time on television and have to put your point across quickly, but you have to know you don't have to start the first three games to know you're an important part of the squad.

"I'd be disappointed if some of my team-mates said I wasn't important at Manchester United but I didn't start many games. Donny will be very, very important for us. Don't worry about that."
