How many games Edouard Mendy is set to miss through injury for Chelsea

Edouard Mendy is set to miss Chelsea’s clash with Southampton next week after sustaining a thigh injury on international duty with Senegal.

The new Blues goalkeeper, who joined in a £22million switch from Rennes last month, has left Senegal’s training camp after picking up the injury.

It is believed he will spend around 10 days on the sidelines, casting him as a major doubt for next Saturday’s meeting with the Saints at Stamford Bridge.

Senegal released a statement on Friday that read: “Mendy sustained an injury to the right thigh that occurred during the training session on Wednesday, October 07, 2020 and has undergone a medical examination at the hospital in Rabat.

“Edouard Mendy has also left the group this afternoon to return to his club where he will undergo further examinations.

“The Senegalese Football Federation wishes him a speedy recovery.”

Mendy’s absence could hand Kepa Arrizabalaga a shock recall in between the sticks, having been dropped to make way for the 28-year-old.

Kepa has seen his form plummet in west London over the past year, making a number of costly mistakes and losing his position as Chelsea’s No.1 goalkeeper as a result.

Frank Lampard will be hoping Mendy produces a speedy recovery ahead of crucial fixtures against Sevilla and Manchester United later this month.

The Senegal shot-stopper kept a clean sheet in his first Premier League outing against Crystal Palace last weekend, helping Lampard’s men pick up a much-needed 4-0 victory.

According to The Athletic, Mendy felt pain in his right thigh in the early stages of Senegal training this week and immediately pulled out of the session.

Their report claims he will be fully assessed by Chelsea’s medical team, with the early diagnosis suggesting his problem is only a “minor” one.

Mendy is understood to feel optimistic about his recovery and only expects to spend a maximum of two weeks on the sidelines.
