Inter Milan step up transfer pursuit of Tottenham contract rebel Jan Vertonghen

Italian giants Inter Milan are said to be considering a swoop for Tottenham centre-back Jan Vertonghen.

Vertonghen's contract with Spurs expires in June, and as of yet there has been no indication that he will follow his defensive partnership Toby Alderweireld in signing a new deal.

Inter already raided Spurs for Christian Eriksen in January, while they have also recently signed Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Victor Moses and Ashley Young from the Premier League.

And according to the Evening Standard Vertonghen could be the next England-based player through the door at the San Siro.

Inter manager Antonio Conte is thought to be focusing on strengthening his defence in the summer, and sees Vertonghen as a perfect cut-price option, with the player able to bring vast amounts of experience.

The 32-year-old has been in and out of the Spurs team this season, making 18 appearances in the Premier League, and he appeared devastated when he was recently taken off in their 3-2 FA Cup win over Southampton , with some suggesting the player knows he can no longer keep up with the pace of English football.

Speaking after the game, however, Vertonghen's agent Tom De Mul said: "His reaction had nothing to do with his future. He was just disappointed when he got subbed off.

"He was unhappy about his performance and the team's performance in the first hour.
