Liverpool could be forced into a U-turn in the January transfer window after Joel Matip appeared to pick up an injury on Sunday.
The Reds are already missing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who are both still expected to be out for several months with respective knee problems.
But Jurgen Klopp’s defensive nightmare got worse during the 1-1 draw with West Brom as Matip was forced off.
It looked as though the Cameroon international picked up a groin injury as he waved to the touchline to come off, which could see him miss several weeks.
Klopp did very little to quell fears of a lengthy lay off during his post-match interview – meaning Liverpool may have no choice but to head to the transfer market next month.
One option could be long-term target Ozan Kabak, who could reportedly be available for just £22m.
According to Eurosport, the 20-year-old has been cleared to leave by Schalke, and a low price tag could make him the ideal signing for Klopp.
Meanwhile, there is still the more experienced option of Kalidou Koulibaly, though he is expected to cost upwards of £70m.
Diego Carlos continues to impress for Sevilla, but the Reds would probably need to meet his £68m release clause to prise him away from the La Liga side.
Finally, another long-term Reds target who it would make a lot of sense to sign in January is Ben White, but Brighton have been extremely firm in their approach that he will not be leaving the club any time soon.
Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher admitted that he expected Matip to pick up another knock this season, before urging Liverpool to sign a top quality centre-back next month.
He said on Sky Sports: “As soon as Virgil van Dijk had his injury against Everton, Fabinho has looked like a top-class centre back in that postion but Joel Matip is too injury prone and can’t take the rigors of Premier League football.
“It’s a massive worry but not a new worry. Joel Matip will not play every game between now and the end of the season.
“You knew that before the injury today and that’s why its paramount that they sign someone in January.”
