Liverpool relinquished their grip on the Champions League after a costly goalkeeping error enabled Atletico Madrid to stage a smash-and-grab victory.
Jurgen Klopp’s side appeared to be heading to the quarter-finals early in extra-time as they led 2-0 but an inexplicable mistake by Adrian, Liverpool’s No2, changed the game and allowed Atletico substitute Marcos Llorente to score a crucial away goal.
Adrian, who was playing because of a hip injury to first choice keeper Alisson Becker, made a hash of clearing a simple pass then got himself into the wrong position as Llorente rolled the ball past him.

‘Our only mistake was we scored our second goal too late. I loved the football we played. We caused them so many problems.
‘It was really exceptional… The pass (from Adrian) was not. I love the boy but that is the wrong decision. It was then a bit easy to finish the situation off for them.

‘We will not blame. He is a man and he knows he made a mistake. We will not judge him.’
Liverpool took the lead through a Gini Wijnaldum header then Roberto Firmino put them within touching distance of the last eight but they completely lost their way after Llorente scored and lost at home for the first in Europe since October 2014.
The style in which Atletico achieved this victory, however, had Klopp biting his tongue
‘It should not have had a massive influence but in that moment the momentum changed,’ said Klopp.

‘Everything that was natural before that changed. They knew it could be their game. We became stiff, they got fresh legs. Congratulations to Atletico.
‘I’m a really under-average loser and if I said everything that was on my mind I would come across as the worst loser in the world.’
Asked to clarify what he meant, Klopp said simply: ‘The way they play, I don’t get it.’
It means Liverpool have lost a European knockout game at Anfield for the first time under Klopp and he said: ‘We have had party after party after party and tonight was a party. Everyone showed up in the best way.
