  • AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie will become a free agent in the summer
  • The 25-year-old Ivorian’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season
  • Kessie is now in talks with Real Madrid over joining them on a free in June
  • The news is a huge blow to Liverpool and Tottenham, who have both been linked

AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie is reportedly in talks with Real Madrid over joining them once his contract expires this summer – dealing a huge blow to Tottenham and Liverpool.

Kessie will be out of contract in June and Milan have so far failed to convince him to extend his spell at the San Siro, meaning that he is now free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club.

Antonio Conte’s Spurs have been heavily linked with Kessie for months and were thought to be leading the race to sign him.

But according to Spanish news outlet El Nacional, Real Madrid are now favourites to land him after Los Blancos president Florentino Perez sent representatives to Milan to wrap up a pre-contract agreement with the 25-year-old.

Kessie, who was named in the Ivory Coast squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, earns approximately £1.8million-a-year and has also been linked with Barcelona, who are reportedly monitoring the situation.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was also said to be keen on bringing Kessie to Anfield as he looks to replace the now-departed Georginio Wijnaldum – with the Reds said to have made an ‘interesting offer’.

Spurs were even ready to make a move for Kessie this month by offering Milan a straight swap deal that would’ve sent Tanguy Ndombele the other way.

According to Il Corriere della Sera and SportMediaset, Milan would rather keep the Ivory Coast international until the end of the season even if though they would most likely lose him for free in the summer.

The latter outlet indicated Ndombele’s £8m-a-year salary is a significant stumbling block for the Rossoneri.

Il Corriere dello Sport are also reporting that he is looking for a deal in the region of £6.7m, significantly above Milan’s offer of a £5m-a-year deal.

Kessie scored 14 Serie A goals in 2021, the most by a Milan midfielder in a calendar year since Kaka netted 15 in 2008

ESPN, meanwhile, reported last week the Serie A outfit had tabled a £5.4m-a-year proposal to the midfielder, who joined on loan from Atalanta in 2017 and made the deal permanent in 2019.

Kessie has scored 35 goals and has provided 16 assists in 205 appearances for Milan and has developed into a key figure in Stefano Pioli’s team, who currently trail city rivals Inter Milan by four points at the top of Serie A.

Kessie has scored 14 league goals in 2021, the most of any Milan midfielder in a calendar year since Kaka netted 15 in 2008.
