Liverpool have joined bitter-rivals Manchester United in the battle to sign Kalvin Phillips.

United are keen to land England and Leeds ace Phillips in a £60m deal after making signing a holding midfielder one of their priorities next summer.

But it has emerged arch enemies Liverpool are also keeping close tabs on Phillips and have registered their interest in him, as Jurgen Klopp plots to bolster his midfield options in the next transfer window.

It means England's two biggest clubs could be set to go head-to-head in a desperate scrap for one of the most in-demand stars in the Premier League.

Leeds have opened contract talks with Phillips in a bid to keep him out of the clutches of one of the top six big guns.

The Yorkshire club are desperate not to lose Phillips, who has become the team's talisman and an iconic figure with supporters at Elland Road.

Phillips, who was born in Leeds and supported them growing up, has seen his reputation soar in 2021 after forcing his way into the England team and helping Gareth Southgate's side reach the Euro 2020 final this summer.

Should Kalvin Phillips stay at Leeds, join Liverpool, sign for Manchester United or hold out for another option? Let us know in the comments section.

Phillips, 25, is under contract at Elland Road until 2024 and has not agitated for a move.

But Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani knows a lucrative move to a bigger club could appeal to Phillips in the not too distant future – and is keen to tie him down to a new and improved deal.

Talks between Leeds director of football Victor Orta and Phillips' representatives have begun, with Elland Road bosses willing to make him the highest-paid member of Marcelo Bielsa's side if it means keeping him.

Phillips would be reluctant to leave his hometown club, but fears Bielsa could quit Elland Road at the end of this season to leave him questioning his long-term future when it comes to winning trophies.

It is understood Phillips is concerned about the impact joining Leeds' hated rivals United could have on his family, who all still live in the city and would favour a move to Anfield should he decide to change clubs.
