Liverpool might have ideal Mason Mount alternative in Eberechi Eze

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reviews the Aston Villa game

Liverpool may need to look no further than the Premier League for a capable back-up option should their hotly-anticipated swoop for Mason Mount fall through. Eberechi Eze is making a name for himself at Crystal Palace, and the trickster’s contract situation could present an opportunity for the Reds this summer.

Jurgen Klopp and co are widely reported to be in the hunt for Mount, who should be available for a palatable transfer fee as he approaches the final 12 months of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

But with Manchester United and Arsenal also keeping tabs on Mount’s situation, not to mention the possibility of the Blues academy product staying in west London, Liverpool would be wise to formulate a Plan B ahead of the forthcoming transfer window.

Klopp simply can’t afford to go without at least one high-quality midfielder as a host of players, including Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, prepare to leave Anfield in a few weeks’ time.

Valued at £26million by Transfermarkt, Eze has been absolutely flying for Palace this season. Having more than doubled his previous best total for a top-flight campaign, the 24-year-old is sitting on 10 Premier League goals with one match left to play.

One particular aspect of Eze’s game which may appeal to Klopp is that, like Mount, he can play in central midfield or as part of a front-three. The Palace star, who was signed from Queens Park Rangers in 2020, would also bring exciting ball carrying ability to Merseyside, the like of which Keita promised to deliver after his big-money move five years ago.

Eze’s contract is only set to run until 2025, meaning the Eagles will soon be faced with a massive decision. With top clubs sure to circle as his deal winds down, Palace will be incentivised to cash in this summer due to the threat of losing him for a discounted fee in 12 months’ time, or even for free the year following.

In light of his sparkling form, Palace could demand significantly more than his touted valuation, having shelled out £20m to sign him from QPR in the first place. If Liverpool do pull the trigger on Eze, he surely would not be the only high-profile signing welcomed by Klopp before the start of next season.

The Reds are heavily rumoured to be in pole position for Brighton ace Alexis Mac Allister, while reports from Argentina indicate that a full £70m agreement has already been struck behind the scenes.

Whoever Klopp has in his sights will likely have to make do without Champions League football, however, with Liverpool in need of a miracle to claw back the deficit to fourth-place Manchester United.
