Man City add to Erling Haaland transfer as big-money Kalvin Phillips deal agreed

Manchester City are set to add to the arrival of Erling Haaland by brining in Kalvin Phillips, having agreed a fee for the midfielder with Leeds United.

Pep Guardiola was keen to boost his options in midfield, with veteran Fernandinho departing the Premier League champions at the end of his contract. Phillips has long been seen as his top target in the position, having impressed for the Whites and for England.

A major hamstring injury restricted him to just 18 starts in the Premier League last season, only his second campaign of top-flight football. But he still starred as Leeds secured their survival on the final day of the season under Jesse Marsch.

Following those performances, the England international is now set to wave goodbye to Elland Road and join title challengers City. According to The Athletic, Guardiola's side have reached an agreement with Leeds for a fee for Phillips.

City are set to pay £42million for the 26-year-old, with another £3m coming in potential bonuses. The deal could be finalised as soon as next week, with Phillips having been poised to return for pre-season training in nine days.

He has two years left on his contract in Yorkshire, but Leeds are said to have been 'increasingly resigned' to seeing him leave this summer. The midfielder has been keen to join City ever since they emerged as suitors, with Guardiola able to offer the attraction of Champions League football.

The deal follows a months-long pursuit of Phillips, with their interest stepping up after it was confirmed that Fernandinho would be departing. He will become their third new arrival of the summer, following in the wake of Julian Alvarez and Haaland.

Leeds had been preparing for his exit, bringing in Marc Roca from Bayern Munich to take Phillips' place in Marsch's squad. His arrival will significantly boost Guardiola's squad as he bids to finally bring the Champions League trophy to the Etihad Stadium.
