Man City WILL NOT buy another left-back this summer, insists Guardiola

Man City will NOT sign another left-back this summer, insists Pep Guardiola, as champions prepare to defend title with just Kyle Walker, Joao Cancelo and new £11m signing Sergio Gomez at full-back

  • Left-back Sergio Gomez has completed his move to Manchester City for £11m
  • Pep Guardiola ruled out signing another left-back before the end of the window
  • The champions were stretched thin with only Joao Cancelo in the position
  • Oleksandr Zinchenko left earlier this summer to join Mikel Arteta at Arsenal

Pep Guardiola has ruled out Manchester City signing another left back as they complete the £11million capture of Anderlecht’s Sergio Gomez.

The 21-year-old had been a target during their pursuit of Marc Cucurella but earmarked as a ‘development’ player, with City planning to loan him to sister club Girona in La Liga.

Guardiola was looking at Borussia Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro and Rayan Ait-Nouri at Wolves, but now he feels Gomez (below) can make an impact at the Etihad this season.

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Manchester City will not sign another left-back this window

Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez, 21, has signed for the champions in a deal worth £11million

Gomez was in Manchester having a medical last night.

The Spain Under 21 player, a product of Barcelona’s academy, was backed by ex-Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany.

‘He’s so young, open to learn, I spoke with Vinny about him,’ said Guardiola. ‘He was a No 10 like Oleksandr Zinchenko, now he adapts. He has to improve in some departments but he’s perfect for what he need.’

Oleksandr Zinchenko left Man City earlier this summer to team up with Mikel Arteta at Arsenal

Asked if the champions are still in the market for a left back, Guardiola replied: ‘No. After Cucurella, we spent time to watch Sergio more. I said OK, this is perfect — the price, young player, desire, go for it.’

The City manager added that unless players leave before the end of the window, there will be no more additions to the squad. Barcelona remain keen on Bernardo Silva.

‘If we have a problem with Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo we have players who can replace them,’ Guardiola said.

Kalvin Phillips and Cole Palmer are likely to miss today’s game at home to Bournemouth, with Guardiola saying City are down to ‘14 players’.
