Man City's Ilkay Gundogan reveals he wants to move into management

Red-hot Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan reveals he’s desperate to move into management when he retires after learning from ‘best coaches’ Guardiola, Klopp and Tuchel during his playing career

Ilkay Gundogan hinted he is looking to become a coach once he retires having worked under the ‘best coaches’ such as Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel. 

The German midfielder is on red-hot form for Manchester City this season with 11 goals in 18 Premier League games this term as Guardiola’s side lead the Premier League table by seven points. 

Gundogan, who worked under both Klopp and Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund, revealed that discussions have taken place over securing the 30-year-old some coaching qualifications.

Gundogan told Goal: ‘Some time ago, I asked around for some information on how the procedure would work if I were to take a trainer’s licence one day. In that sense, it’s more than just a thought.

‘But how I would like to orient myself then, my thoughts are not yet that far.

‘The fact is that with Pep, Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, I’ve had pretty much the best coaches in club football so far. You learn a lot and think about how you can pass on this knowledge after your career.’

Gundogan arrived at the Etihad Stadium in the same summer as Guardiola back in 2016, but is currently in the goalscoring season of his life under the Spanish coach.

The midfielder has adopted a slightly more advanced midfield role this term and has ten goals in his last ten league games. 

The 30-year-old admitted that he enjoyed working under Guardiola almost immediately and that the head coach’s passion for the club is still strong today. 

Gundogan added: ‘I was injured at first but then I joined a team that you thought had been playing this Pep football for years.

‘The speed with which he can communicate his football tactically to the team is impressive. That was also the case at Bayern (Munich) back then.

‘At the same time, it’s also this season, because he still acts with such motivation in every training session. 

‘There was always talk that Pep was only a coach for a maximum of three years – at the moment we see that these critics were wrong.’
