Man United fans label Hannibal Mejbri as man-of-the-match vs Liverpool

‘He showed more fight in 10 minutes than the rest of them combined’: Man United fans label youngster Hannibal Mejbri, 19, as their man-of-the-match against Liverpool… despite him only coming on in the 84th minute!

  • Manchester United fans nominated Hannibal Mejbri as their man of the match
  • The Red Devils were thrashed 4-0 by Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening
  • Tunisian midfielder Mejbri, 19, came on in the 84th minute for Anthony Elanga
  • He tore around and flew into tackles – commitment that United fans appreciated

Manchester United fans have hailed the commitment and fight of Hannibal Mejbri, nominating him man-of-the-match despite playing just nine minutes against Liverpool.

The Red Devils were thrashed 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday evening in an embarrassingly shoddy performance, after losing 5-0 at Old Trafford against the same opponents back in October.

United’s players were blasted after the match for their lack of spirit and desire on the pitch, half-heartedly pressing and allowing the hosts, who enjoyed 72 per cent possession, 897 passes to 354 in a strangely passive and deferential showing.

That changed when academy midfielder Mejbri, 19, came on for Anthony Elanga in the 84th minute, as he tore around the pitch with vigour, flying into tackles and giving away a good portion of the fouls his side made in the entire game.

Despite picking up a yellow card and nearly getting sent off, fans felt that typified his determination, and took to social media in their droves to heap praise on the teenage Tunisian.

Club stalwart Antonio Valencia led the accolades, saying: ‘Today I’m feel(ing) proud of this boy.’

The academy midfield star only came on in the 84th minute of his side’s 4-0 loss on Tuesday

But Mejbri flew into tackles and tore around the pitch, winning praise for his determination

Another fan account said: ’19 year old Hannibal Mejbri showed more fight, bottle, energy and attitude in 10 minutes than the rest of this team has all season.’

More added similar thoughts: ‘Hannibal Mejbri, 19 years old. Comes on in the 84th minute and gets stuck in while the ‘senior players’ walked about for 90 minutes. MOTM for me.’

Another said: ‘United’s MOTM Hannibal Mejbri. The kid showed more fight in 5 minutes than the rest of them put together in 93 minutes.’

A fourth tweeted: ‘Sad indication of how poor we are is Hannibal Mejbri was our man of the match and he only played for about 8 minutes. #LIVMUN,’ with one simply saying: ‘Man Utd’s best player tonight: Hannibal Mejbri,’ with a thumbs-up emoji.

And United fans took to social media in their droves to heap praise on Mejbri’s spirit and desire

One fan posted: ‘Incredible fighting spirit shown by young Hannibal Mejbri. The others should hang their heads in shame. Well done, young man! Way to go #LIVMUN #MUFC’.

A sixth continued: ‘Hannibal Mejbri showed more fight in his little cameo than every single one of our players who started….they need to take note and take a look in the mirror…embarrassing from them’.

While another added: ‘Hannibal Mejbri a 19 year old kid came on and showed more passion and desire in 5 minutes than the rest of the team combined for the full 90. I say bench these entitled, spineless individuals and play the kids for the rest of the season.’

And one tweeted: ’18-year-old Hannibal Mejbri has shown more willing and fight in 10 minutes than the rest of the #MUFC team managed over 90 minutes.’

Former United star Antonio Valencia added he felt ‘proud’ of the young academy midfielder

United icon Gary Neville, speaking as a commentator for Sky Sports, said: ‘It takes a young kid to come on and show the rest of them how to sprint for the ball and put a challenge in.

‘I’m actually proud of him! Maybe he doesn’t like the idea of Liverpool players passing it round him. I wish the rest of them were the same.

‘The kid showed something that he didn’t like the idea of Liverpool taking the mickey out of his team-mates. At least he showed something.

‘It wasn’t great him kicking players but that’s something Man United fans can take at least.’
