According to the Sun, the Norwegian has told his United stars that they are better than the club’s heroes of 1999, and believes signing Ronaldo makes his side stronger than the famous treble winners he played with 22 years ago.
United were in need of a centre-forward, and when it became clear that Juventus were willing to cash in on the 36-year-old, they swooped in to hijack a deal that could’ve seen Ronaldo join bitter rivals City.
Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford after 12 years away and Solskjaer believes last season’s top scorer in Serie A will push United on for the title, ending their nine year wait for league success.
Solskjaer also reportedly believes that Chelsea are his main competition, and does not consider Liverpool or City as United’s biggest threat this season, due to the signing of Romelu Lukaku this summer.

United weren’t the only team to re-sign a former star this summer, as Chelsea splashed out £97.5million on Lukaku from Inter Milan, and the Belgian has already hit the ground running with a goal against Arsenal.
Solskjaer believes that Lukaku is the player that can have a similar impact to Ronaldo and majorly affect the title race, and Chelsea are currently tied with United on points, same with Liverpool.
However, Liverpool have only made one signing this summer as Ibrahima Konate arrived from RB Leipzig for £36m, and Solskjaer isn’t too concerned about Jurgen Klopp’s side, or Pep Guardiola’s City.
City were also in the hunt for a centre-forward, and attempted to sign Ronaldo in what would have been a controversial deal, but the Portuguese star chose Old Trafford, handing Guardiola his second blow of the summer.
City were linked with Harry Kane for the entirety of the summer, and saw a £100m bid rejected for the Englishman, but were priced out of a deal by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy despite the forward wanting to leave the club.
Guardiola’s side still broke the Premier League transfer record this summer, as they signed Jack Grealish for £100m from Aston Villa, but their lack of a natural no.9 may hinder them over the course of the season.
Ronaldo is set to make his second United debut against Newcastle on September 11 in front of the Old Trafford crowd, and fans will be able to see exactly what the 36-year-old is going to offer this year.
The Portuguese star will be full of confidence too, after scoring a brace in Portugal’s 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland – becoming the mens all-time leading international goal scorer.
