Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has Virgil van Dijk belief about Kalidou Koulibaly

Man Utd: Pundit discusses possiblity of signing Kalidou Koulibaly

Not for the first time, Manchester United are being linked with Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly. It’s been claimed the Senegal international would love to arrive at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils chosen as his No 1 destination should he leave Serie A behind. And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s viewpoint on the defender is already known, with the Norwegian viewing him as being an equal to Liverpool powerhouse Virgil van Dijk.

Spanish newspaper Marca have claimed that Koulibaly could be finally set to leave Napoli behind.

And it’s claimed that he’s keen on a move to United, who are currently flying high at the top of the Premier League table.

Koulibaly has been a huge asset for Napoli in recent years, even making the Serie A team of the season in 2019 as a result of his phenomenal performances at the back.

His current deal with the Italian giants runs until 2023 and he won’t be cheap to sign, with the 29-year-old valued at a huge £100million.

But Solskjaer’s opinion on the defender suggests a move to Old Trafford isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.

The Evening Standard reported last year that Solskjaer viewed Koulibaly as an equal to both Harry Maguire and Liverpool star Van Dijk.

He thinks the Napoli star is one of the best three centre-backs in world football, a player who would enhance any side.

And that suggests that, if Koulibaly pushes to leave the Stadio San Paulo at the end of the campaign, United could very well up bringing him in.

They’ve spent big on defenders during the Solskjaer era, ever since the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford in December 2018.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka arrived for a fee of £50m from Crystal Palace in 2019, making him one of the most-expensive right-backs in world football in the process.

And United outdid Liverpool’s £75m move for Van Dijk by paying £80m for Maguire nearly two years ago, with the England international now the costliest defender on the planet.

The club’s defence has improved considerably of late, with Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly all stepping up.

But Koulibaly could be too good a signing to ignore at the end of the campaign, especially if Napoli decide to cash in.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT host Jim White has claimed Napili president Aurelio De Laurentiis has laughed off the prospect of Koulibaly leaving.

“There isn’t a window in the last two, three or four that we don’t see big mentions of the Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly,” White said.

“This morning, I spoke to Aurelio De Laurentiis, the Napoli owner, and said what about your player, are there bids in for him?

“He laughed it off saying he’s not for sale. It seems on this occasion Koulibaly is going nowhere.

“He stays and that was as recent as this morning. Anyone going in with anything other than £100million for Koulibaly can forget it.

“He’s absolutely not for sale unless one of the big clubs in England come up with £100million.”

Koulibaly isn’t the only centre-back being linked with United.

Ben White has impressed at Brighton, reportedly forcing his way onto Solskjaer’s transfer shortlist as a result.

RB Leipzig powerhouse Dayot Upamecano is under consideration as well, having sparkled for the Bundesliga giants over the last two years.

And links to Sergio Ramos have arisen again, too.

Ramos is out of contract at the end of the season but United will be mindful, having been used by the Spain international to get a new deal six years ago.
