Man Utd chief Ed Woodward may have made glaring transfer error ahead of deadline day

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is set to have a busy deadline day with the Red Devils desperate to bring in reinforcements before the 11pm cut-off.

United’s problems were brought to the fore in their 6-1 drubbing against Tottenham on Sunday.

Former Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has flown into Manchester and will pen a two-year deal to solve Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s forward problem.

And there will also be a new left-back following the Uruguayan as Alex Telles has agreed to join from Porto.

Solskjaer’s priority target this summer has always been a new right winger and United have pursued Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho for many months.

However, the German club have refused to budge from their £108m valuation and are unlikely to sell the England international on deadline day.

United had a £91m bid for Sancho rejected last week – but Woodward may now regret tabling such an offer.

For the entirety of this transfer window, Woodward has insisted that his side do not have the funds to spend heavily.

After missing out on Sancho, the 13-time Premier League champions are likely to bid for an alternative.

However, any club wanting to sell their winger will know exactly how much United have to play with and may hike up the price.

Woodward knew he was never going to land Sancho for £91m so he should have kept the club’s available funds a secret.

Making it public knowledge has only informed any other sides he wants to do business with that United do have the cash to play with.

Barcelona ace Ousmane Dembele is one of those being considered by the United hierarchy.

The 23-year-old will be allowed to leave the Nou Camp for a cut-price fee in the region of £50m.

Other options being considered by Old Trafford bosses are Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic and Juventus’ Douglas Costa.

If United do not buy a winger before the deadline they can still capture players from the Football League until October 16.

Watford’s Ismalia Sarr and Brentford’s Said Benrahma are being watched by Solskjaer’s scouts.
