Manchester United were swatted aside at the weekend and BBC pundit Garth Crooks has stated that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer felt the sting of Pep Guardiola’s secret weapon at Manchester City.
Manchester United were crushed by “silent assassin” Rodri in their recent defeat to Manchester City.
That is the verdict from BBC pundit Crooks, who believes Pep Guardiola can finally do away with Fernandinho.
City were in cruise control in the Manchester derby after beating their local rivals 2-0.
An own goal from Eric Bailly in the opening exchanges of the match set the tempo as Bernardo Silva got on the end of a fine Joao Cancelo cross right before half-time.
Guardiola’s men took their foot off the brake after in the second half and almost kept the ball to themselves.
In a drab encounter for the Red Devils at Old Trafford, their fans watched another humiliating display – two weeks after their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool.
And Crooks believes Guardiola’s secret weapon Rodri was the catalyst for much of City’s superior work over United.
After naming the Spaniard in his team of the week, he said: “For years I have been singing the praises of Fernandinho and the contribution he has made to Manchester City over the years.
“Such is the Brazilian’s value, Guardiola has kept the midfielder in his squad at the age of 36.
“However, the club need not worry any longer as they have a player who can now replace him.
“Rodri is City’s new silent assassin. In fact, if you’re not looking out for him you would hardly know he’s there – unless you’re playing for the opposition.
“In which case you cannot help but feel his presence or continual interventions.
“This was an extraordinary performance by City and Rodri is now the best insurance policy for their two central defenders.”
Rodri has made 14 appearances for City this season, missing just two matches in the Premier League.
That includes a 1-0 loss to Tottenham on the opening day, denoting his importance further to the side.
