Manchester United called an emergency meeting shortly after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were dismantled 4-1 by Watford, but Jamie Carragher has mocked the board amid their long discussion.

Carragher made light of United’s emergency board meeting that was called shortly after Solskjaer’s side were thrashed 4-1 by Watford, claiming their decision from it would be ‘obvious’ and the meeting ‘wouldn’t last long’.

The writing is on the wall for Solskjaer as Watford stunned United at Vicarage Road, where the Red Devils completely capitulated to extend an awful run in the Premier League.

United now have just one win in seven Premier League games, taking a total of four points from a possible 21 as their season has completely collapsed.

An emergency meeting was called amongst the board to discuss United’s next steps, but this has been laughed at by Carragher.

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the United board completed a five-hour internal talk and have decided to sack Solskjaer after the decision was officially approved by Joel Glazer, but Carragher was shocked that they were calling a meeting in the first place.

The pundit said on Sky Sports: “What are they going to talk about? The board meeting won’t last too long.

“It’s got to the stage sometimes where it comes untenable. I was here when it happened to Roy Hodgson where he was in the job for 6 months and the atmosphere changed and sometimes it needs to be done for the club and the manager’s benefit too.

“You look at Ole as a human being and it’s not good for him to be United manager and it’s obvious what’s going to happen.

“I don’t care what anyone says United have quality players you can’t lose to Watford 4-1. Those players and the performances are an absolute disgrace because it’s one of the highest paid squads in the world and I’ve watched a lot of Watford and they’re awful and to lose there 4-1 is disgusting and disgraceful.

“The manager will go we know that but the players’ performances this season have been scandalous.”

According to reports, the decision to sack Solskjaer has been made and a mutual agreement has been reached to part ways, with an official statement anticipated.

Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick are expected to step in as interim bosses, while a search for a new manager gets underway.

It wasn’t the fairy-tale ending for Solskjaer, but the Norwegian may feel hard done by due to a lack of performances from some of his players, including new signing Jadon Sancho.

The £73million summer signing is still yet to score or assist a goal this season, and injury to Raphael Varane has also been a major blow.

United have an incredible squad, but it’s set to be a tough job for whoever replaces Solskjaer, with the players underperforming and suffering a lack of identity at Old Trafford.

The games aren’t expected to get much easier for United either, with away trips to Villarreal and Chelsea before a home clash against Arsenal.

United now may have to wait until the summer to appoint a permanent successor after missing out on Antonio Conte to Tottenham earlier this year and with other targets such as Zinedine Zidane not wanting to take on the job right now.
