Manchester United fans believe Erik ten Hag has acted out of desperation by swopping to sign Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia after casting a despairing eye over Luke Shaw in training.
Fresh from agreeing a £56million fee with Barcelona over long-term target Frenkie de Jong, news has filtered through that United have also agreed a deal for a second Dutchman. The Red Devils are understood to have moved to strike an agreement in the region of £13m for Feyenoord left-back Malacia, despite the fact Lyon were on the cusp of clinching the Netherlands international.
The 22-year-old now appears destined to follow in De Jong's footsteps by heading to Old Trafford, but his impending transfer has raised questions as to why United have moved to add a new left-back to the squad, when the need of reinforce in other areas is far more pressing. However, it seems a significant section of United's fanbase feel they can indeed answer that query as an almost universally acknowledged theory over first-choice left-back Shaw has emerged.

Ten Hag took his first day of training at the club's Carrington complex this week where he was afforded the opportunity to work with the majority of his new squad up close for the first time. And according to countless United fans, one session in close quarters with Shaw is all that was need to spark Ten Hag into action and hijack Lyon's move for left-back Malacia.
One of a number of brutal assessments of the England full-back shared to Twitter read: "Ten Hag saw Luke Shaw attempt an overlap run yesterday and decided we need a new left back. My manager."
Another fan wrote: "Erik saw Luke Shaw in training for just one day and my man was done," followed by a laughing face, while another disapproving United follower added: "Luke Shaw in the bin??" alongside two love-heart eyes emojis.

And the scathing assessments didn't end there. A different fan wrote: "One training session with Luke Shaw and ETH knew he can't rely on him," while another remarked, "Man saw Luke Shaw train for one day". Both were accompanied by a string of crying face emojis.
Another added: "ETH saw Luke Shaw at training once and said f**k it, bring me someone decent please. And with this, I believe the FDJ deal is totally done."
Shaw amassed just 27 appearances in all competitions for United last campaign as a number of injuries took their toll on the 27-year-old. The majority of the left-back's outings occurred in the early stages of last season, which included humiliating defeats to Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester City and Watford – the latter, the game which culminated in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking.
