Manchester United will be hoping Sir Alex Ferguson can repeat a trick from 2018 before his former side’s Europa League final.

The Scot, who won 28 major titles during his 26 years at Old Trafford, has travelled with the squad for the European finale against Villarreal in Poland.

Facing their Spanish opponents at the Gdansk Arena, it marks the club’s biggest game under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as it gives them a chance of winning a trophy for the first time since their 2017 win in the same tournament.

And United may be hoping that Sir Alex pulls a trick out the bag to inspire them before the Europa League final.

The 79-year-old was invited by the current manager to speak to the squad in January 2019, as reported by The Sun, a month after the Norwegian’s arrival as interim manager.

Having scored 14 goals to win all four of their games since Solskjaer took over from Mourinho, the treble-winning boss was invited to Carrington to inspire the players.

A source said: “He told the lads that this group will make United dominant and successful again.

“He said that he believes in them and he wants them to enjoy themselves and to fight hard for each other and leave everything on the pitch.

“He also told them that the club is in good hands and he promised them that it will become bigger and better in the years to come and they will be part of this success. The players believe that there are some good times ahead.”

And it clearly worked, going on an unbeaten Premier League and FA Cup run of 15 games before beating PSG in the Champions League round-of-16.

But another inspiring speech from Sir Alex would surprise defender Luke Shaw, who said in the press conference: “I wouldn’t expect him [Sir Alex Ferguson] to speak to us.

"We see him in the hotel at the moment, but I think within the team we need to inspire ourselves to focus on what we need to do as a group.

"I’m sure we don’t need people to inspire us for the game tomorrow, as much as a legend he is.”
