Man Utd identify 21-year-old Monaco star as answer to holding midfield problems

Manchester United have reportedly identified young Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni as the man to solve their defensive midfield problems.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer currently possesses Nemanja Matic, Fred and Scott McTominay as first-team options in the holding positions.

But Matic’s age means that he tends to be overwhelmed without a partner in the centre of the pitch, while neither Fred nor McTominay are trusted by Solskjaer to play on their own.

That has hampered Solskjaer and United, with the Norwegian forced to deploy a more defensive 4-2-3-1 formation in a bid to ensure his team is solid defensively.

Those defensive tactics have been one of the main reasons behind United’s repeated failure to break down teams.

And with a wealth of attacking options now at his disposal, Solskjaer is understood to be keen to switch to a 4-3-3 system.

To do that though, he will have to bring in a new defensive midfielder whom he can trust to fill the sole holding role in such a formation.

Declan Rice and Eduardo Camavinga have both been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but it appears that the Red Devils have a new target.

According to Belgian football expert Sacha Tavolieri, via GiveMeSport, Tchouameni has emerged as the frontrunner.

The 21-year-old has become a regular in Monaco’s first-team since joining in a £16.2million move from Bourdeux 18 months ago.

Having made 42 appearances last season as Monaco secured a top three spot in Ligue 1, Tchouameni has already made five outings this term.

In fact, the midfielder has also opened his goalscoring account for the season, having opened the scoring in a 2-0 win over Sparta Prague in Champions League Qualifying.

He has mainly featured as a defensive midfielder for the French side, with his performances drawing the eye of United.

And with a central midfielder now the Red Devils’ priority for the final two weeks of the window, it is stated that they could make a formal approach soon.
