Man Utd in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Cristian Romero after ‘making £39m offer’

Manchester United are in advanced negotiations with Italian side Atalanta over the transfer of Argentine defender Christian Romero, according to journalist Nicolo Schira.

The 23-year-old centre-half has been one of the most discussed names for a potential transfer and is on a shortlist consisting of Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, Villarreal’s Pau Torres and more.

Last season, Manchester United used several defensive pairings as they tried to field a solid partnership with captain Harry Maguire.

The likes of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe were all given time last season, with the former excelling the most, but United still see centre-half as a priority position to work on if they are to close the gap between themselves and Manchester City.

Romero joined Atalanta on loan last season from Juventus but that move is expected to be made permanent for an agreed fee of €13.7m.

If he does leave for Manchester United, Atalanta are expected to make about three times the profit – a fee of £39m is rumoured.

Prior to Juventus, Romero played for Belgrano in his native Argentina.

He moved to Genoa in 2018 and an impressive season earned him a move to Juventus, but he never played for the Turin club as he was loaned back to Genoa for the 2018-19 campaign.

His form for Atalanta has been mightily impressive and he even earned his first Argentina cap this month, playing in a recent World Cup qualifier against Chile.

United did business with Atalanta last season with the signing of youngster Amad Diallo, and the Italian club, led by the impressive Gian Piero Gasperini, are known to develop young players, having done well in Serie A over the last few years.
