Manchester United are reportedly in a race against time to complete a deal for one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top transfer targets. The Red Devils are attempting to seal a move for Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres, with Solskjaer keen to upgrade his defence.
United are aiming to sign a high-quality partner for Harry Maguire in the summer transfer window, with neither Eric Bailly nor Victor Lindelof impressing.
They had several targets on their shortlist, including Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde.
Varane is set to leave the Bernabeu this summer with his contract entering its final year, with United believed to be one of the frontrunners.
But it now appears that the Red Devils have turned their full attention to the highly-rated Torres, who has impressed under Unai Emery.

Spanish radio show El Larguero report that United are now leading the race to sign the Spanish international.
They also claim that United are aiming to complete the deal before Torres links up with the Spanish national team for this summer’s European Championships.
Spain’s first match of the delayed tournament is on 14 June, when they play Sweden in their opening Group E game.
As well as waiting to get their business done as soon as possible, there is another reason why United want to get a deal done so early in the window.

That reason is the fact that the release clause in Torres’ contract will rise by more than £10million if he does not move before the final 15 days of the transfer window.
Thankfully for the Red Devils, they are said to be in advanced talks with Villarreal, which should see them sign the defender for £43.4m, instead of a higher fee.
It is reported that those talks are so advanced that other suitors, such as Real Madrid, are now ‘resigned’ to seeing Torres move to Old Trafford.
Torres’ speed and ball-playing abilities appear to make him the perfect foil for Maguire, with the 24-year-old becoming a key player for Emery.
The defender has started 29 league games this season as Villarreal have challenged for European qualification in La Liga.
He also played all 90 minutes in his side’s 2-1 win over Arsenal in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final, though has previously made it clear his focus is on Villarreal.
“Right now I have a contract (until 2024) and I know that I still have room for improvement,” he told Sport.
“I know that I am in a club where they will treat me well, I will not lack anything and that is very important to me.”
