Manchester United’s transfer officials have been busy the past few days checking off a number of targets and Christian Pulisic appears to be the latest on that long list. Erik ten Hag would have known that he faces a tall order turning things around at Old Trafford when he took the job before the summer transfer window.

But two defeats from their opening two games have highlighted just how much work needs to be done at United. Lisandro Martinez is the only real change to United’s starting line-up from last season while Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia have also joined this summer.

United have so far failed to bring in any forward players despite strong interest in a host of targets. Cristiano Ronaldo’s future remains uncertain with the Portugal international not yet confirming publically whether he wants to leave or stay at the club.

Neither Marcus Rashford or Jadon Sancho have impressed so far in the opening two games either and Anthony Elanga was the only attacking option off the bench in the recent 4-0 defeat to Brentford. United have since been linked with Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix in a blockbuster transfer and more attacking recruits are being looked at.

According to The Athletic, United are considering a loan bid for Chelsea outcast Pulisic. The USA international has attracted plenty of interest from other Premier League clubs such as Newcastle.

The Magpies have so far been rebutted in attempts to sign Pulisic, but the winger is said to be growing frustrated at a lack of minutes under Thomas Tuchel heading into this year’s World Cup. Atletico and Juventus are also said to be interested in Pulisic, but United may hold the upper hand.

It is said that Pulisic ‘would prefer’ a move to United as he pushes for a move away before the end of the transfer window. Pulisic and Tuchel have a long-standing history with the Chelsea boss handing the winger his debut at the age of 17 when they worked together at Borussia Dortmund.

But they’ve had a strained relationship since Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard in January 2021. Speaking earlier this summer, Pulisic reflected on his long-standing relationship with the Chelsea boss.

And he accepted that there have been “tougher moments” between the pair at Chelsea. He said: “Being an American over in Germany was very tough for me at the start but he [Tuchel] gave me my opportunity and he clearly saw something in me.

“I was really grateful for that and then we had some good moments together and also some tougher moments. Now being at Chelsea and him coming back, I think he’s grown as a coach and I’ve grown as a player, it’s about trying to find that relationship.

“We’ve had the good moments and tougher moments, I need to prove myself and that’s what I’m going to do.”
