Man Utd questioned over ‘strange’ transfer decision which has raised questions

Manchester United’s decision to sell Romelu Lukaku has been criticised, with question marks being raised about the club’s coaching. Lukaku spent two years at Old Trafford after being signed in a deal worth around £75million.

The Belgian scored 42 times in 96 games for the Red Devils, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to sell him in the summer of 2019, with Inter Milan taking him to Serie A.

He netted 34 times in his first season in Italy and already has seven goals in his first six appearances this term.

That has led to some questioning the decision to sell Lukaku, with Watford captain Troy Deeney claiming that the improved coaching at Inter has improved his game.

“He’s very good, and I always thought it was a strange one when United got rid of him,” Deeney told talkSPORT.

“They kind of wanted a complete player because his goal record wasn’t that bad, to be honest. “

“But I do understand why people were getting a little frustrated in terms of when he was at United.

“When he’s gone out to Italy you can see the tactical side of it and coaching side of it has really improved his game. He’s got a point to prove.”

Deeney added: “He’s been a beast of a human being since he was 16; everyone was saying ‘look at the talent’.

“And the goals are there now. In games you can see how strong he is, his link up play is good and he got an assist technically for the goal against England.”

Antonio Conte is the man who has helped Lukaku rediscover his form with Inter and the former Chelsea boss has admitted he tried to bring the striker back to Stamford Bridge.

The former Chelsea boss won the Premier League title in 2017 and Conte has revealed he failed in a bid to sign the then, Everton striker.

“I asked for two players and we were very, very close after we won the league,” Conte told the Telegraph.

“One player was Romelu Lukaku, the second player was Virgil van Dijk, and these two players were very, very close.

“We were in contact every day and I always said that with these two players we would improve my team by 30 per cent.

“It was a pity that it didn’t happen and Romelu is showing with Inter that my idea was right and also Van Dijk has shown with Liverpool that my idea was right for the club.”

Meanwhile, United could be in line to hand Edinson Cavani his full debut for the club this weekend. Anthony Martial is the latest forward to be struggling with injury, after he missed a training session with France with a back issue.
