Manchester United finally look to be on the mend after poor start to the season thanks to a run of eight games in all competitions without defeat under the wings of Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick. With defensive woes having been a problem under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the German looks to have fixed them, although offensively the Red Devils could still improve and they have been linked with a move for River Plate striker Julian Alvarez.

United have scored 30 goals in 18 Premier League games this season, less than six other teams in the division.

Though Cristiano Ronaldo has 14 goals across all competitions, United have no other player with more than five strikes.

Both Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial have also been linked with moves away from the club in the near future.

And Alvarez could be one to replace them according to Sport, given his prowess for Argentina’s league champions.

The report states that United would be willing to pay the £17million clause for Alvarez.

Dubbed ‘the best striker in Argentine football’, the River Plate talent has scored 31 goals in 90 games for Los Millionarios, alongside gaining five Argentina caps.

At the age of just 21, Alvarez has already garnered attention from Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.

However, the report says that United are ready to trump their competitors to seal the deal, with agent Fernando Hidalgo ready to fly out to England this week.

At £17m, the deal would represent a relative bargain in the current transfer market for a player who has been touted to become a star of the next generation.

And with scouts supposedly confirming that Alvares has unlimited potential to United chiefs, a move could be made sooner rather than later.

The potential departures of Martial and Cavani could leave space for Alvarez to join the club.

With 18 assists and 23 goals in the calendar year of 2021, Alvarez became the top goalscorer in the division.

And alongside winning the Argentine Primera Division with River and winning the Copa America with his country, Alvarez has done it all this season.

United will look to go within one point of the top four with a win over Wolves on January 2.
