Manchester United had to work hard to beat Sheriff but did exactly that courtesy of fine headers from Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford, as well as a late strike from Cristiano Ronaldo. It was a comfortable night under the lights for the home side, who were in cruise control right from the very beginning. Express Sport will now take a look at four players who impressed during the match at Old Trafford.

Diogo Dalot

Dalot has been enjoying a good season with United, with the Portugal international making the right-back slot his own.

And he set the Red Devils on their way to victory, heading home after a pinpoint corner from Christian Eriksen.

Dalot was a constant presence in attack, gunning forward with his usual gusto and stretching the Sheriff backline in the process.

Without him, United’s wait to break the deadlock could have gone on and on – with Sheriff producing some dogged defending in the first half.

United need to negotiate a new contract for Dalot, fast, if they’re to prevent him from leaving amid links to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Man Utd transfers: Plans for next three signings are damning on Solskjaer

Alejandro Garnacho

Manchester United decided to spring a selection surprise prior to the showdown by picking Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine had previously made five appearances for the club off the bench but, under both Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag, hadn’t started.

Garnacho clearly has much to learn but this was a good showing from the youngster, who posed Sheriff all sorts of problems with his pace and trickery.

It was an eye-catching display, and one that couldn’t have come at a better time given how the World Cup in Qatar is creeping closer.

Garnacho can expect more minutes to come in the wake of his performance and, potentially, that spells trouble for Jadon Sancho.

Credit to Rashford and Ronaldo for their goals, but it was certainly the duo’s younger team-mate who stole the show.

Casemiro

Casemiro had to wait a while to get going at United following his summer move from Real Madrid.

But this was another strong showing from the Brazil international, who oozes class in the middle of the park.

Casemiro is a player in his prime and United, in the 30-year-old, have a player who can break up play and create opportunities for their forwards in equal measure.

Back in the summer, the Red Devils’ main target was Frenkie de Jong.

But nobody is regretting the decision to switch focus to Casemiro instead, with the Samba star simply an undroppable presence in the middle of the park.

Christian Eriksen

Another player United signed back in the summer was Eriksen, who arrived on a free transfer from Brentford.

And it’s clear with each passing game that the Denmark international, at zero cost, is a bargain.

Eriksen has been one of United’s best players this term, helping to dictate play in midfield having formerly been more on a No 10 during his spells at Ajax, Tottenham and Inter Milan.

Not since Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick have the Red Devils had such a midfield gem at their disposal.

And though United also have the likes of Donny van de Beek and Fred in reserve, Eriksen is simply a class above…

Man Utd’s next five fixtures

United are next in action against West Ham on Sunday, with the Red Devils hoping to return to winning ways in the Premier League after their 1-1 draw with Chelsea last time out.

On November 3, they then face Real Sociedad in a crunch Europa League clash in Spain.

After that, United have a double header against Aston Villa – who they’ll face in the Premier League and Carabao Cup on November 6 and November 10.

On November 13, United will travel to Fulham – who sit a spot below them in the league table having picked up 18 points from their opening 12 fixtures.
