Manchester United have been warned they will have to pay a lot more than they originally expected for Cody Gakpo. Dutch legend Ronald de Boer says the Netherlands international is worth £69.1million (€80m).

Gakpo is United’s top target for the January transfer window. Erik ten Hag wants to add attacking reinforcements to his squad following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

PSV Eindhoven star Gakpo is replicating his fine goalscoring form from last season this term and has also netted in his country’s first two games at the World Cup in Qatar. PSV were initially reported to want around £34million for the 23-year-old.

More recently, that price is claimed to have risen to around £51.8m (€60m). But De Boer still believes that is lower than the player’s true value.

The former Rangers forward has defended PSV’s decision to keep hold of Gakpo in the summer. And he reckons they are now set to get a lot more money than first thought.

De Boer told Sky Sports News: “It’s funny, before the season they could have sold him to an English club, Leeds United, for a lot of money. But PSV said ‘no, we’ll wait because we’re going to play in the Champions League’.

“And they got kicked out by Rangers, my team, and people thought ‘there goes the money, that was bad management’ they said, because now they lose a lot of money. And they kicked out even the technical director because of that, not totally, but he’s out, John de Jong.

“And now he must be sitting on his couch thinking ‘Gakpo is now worth €80m probably so why am I sitting at home?’ because he did a great job. But that’s how it goes nowadays.”

Gakpo has nine goals and 12 assists to his name in Eredivisie so far this season. De Boer has revealed his admiration for the player, both on and off the pitch.

He added: “But talking about Gakpo himself, his qualities, he’s a great youngster. He has speed, which is important nowadays, he can dribble but most importantly he has a great shot.

“He is direct to the goal and he finds the net quite easily. And what is not less important is I think he’s a great person.

“If you see him through the camera he’s really down to earth and I love him as a football player and as a person.”
