Man Utd warned ‘panic’ Edinson Cavani transfer could hinder Ole Gunnar Solskjaer star

Manchester United have been warned that the signing of Edinson Cavani could prohibit the development of Mason Greenwood. That’s according to Paul Merson, who has questioned whether the Uruguayan can cut it in the Premier League following his surprise move to Old Trafford.

Cavani is currently in Manchester and will be confirmed as a United player later today.

He was released by Paris Saint-Germain earlier this year after refusing to sign a short-term contract extension.

The striker had looked destined to join Atletico Madrid but they eventually cooled their interest.

Cavani has been in his native South America spending time with his family and taking part in ballet classes to keep active.

Now he is set for a huge challenge with United as he looks to follow in the footsteps of former PSG team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports pundit Merson is concerned that Cavani’s arrival could see Greenwood’s game time reduced.

“It’s definitely a quick fix with Cavani, he’s 33 years of age,” he told Sky Sports.

“You’ve got Mason Greenwood there, who’s going to be a proper player.

“Is he going to be held back for a 33 year old? Cavani was a great player, he was top, top drawer.

“He’s 33 years of age Hayley, how many players are playing in the Premier League at 33?

“You’ve got to have pace, Man United play a certain way and try and counter attack with pace with Anthony Martial and Greenwood, Marcus Rashford.

“Even when Daniel James is in the team [they have pace] and if Cavani comes into the team, he’ll hold the ball up but for me, it’s a panic player.

“I hope he comes in and does the business but it’s not a future signing.

“It’s not like we are moving forward with Manchester United and in three of four years we are going to catch up with Liverpool and Manchester City.

“This is not going to catch them two up now.”

United have now confirmed the signing of Porto left-back Alex Telles, who has signed a four-year deal with an option of a fifth.
