Manchester United’s overwhelming need for a top-class central midfielder could soon be addressed if the club’s hierarchy decide to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and replace him with Brendan Rodgers during this month’s international break. The current Red Devils boss finds himself on very thin ice after a lacklustre defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

United were firmly second-best throughout the encounter, with Eric Bailly’s own goal handing City the perfect start before Bernardo Silva headed home to double their advantage on the stroke of half-time.

The result saw the pressure on Solskjaer grow even stronger after Liverpool inflicted a five-goal mauling on United to put his job under serious threat last month.

If the Norwegian boss is relieved of his duties over the coming weeks, Rodgers could reportedly swap his current role at Leicester to take charge at Old Trafford.

The 48-year-old has struck a verbal agreement with United chiefs to replace Solskjaer when the job becomes available, according to CaughtOffside.

Rodgers would undoubtedly be looking to use his expertise in the transfer market to bolster his new club’s ranks in January and when next summer rolls around.

It seems as though he may consider a raid on Leicester for the services of Youri Tielemans, who has long been touted by many as the answer to United’s problems in midfield.

The Belgian playmaker has been linked with the Red Devils for some time after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s finest box-to-box operators in recent years.

His influence at Leicester has been crucial in shaping their fortunes under Rodgers, with the Scot helping the Foxes to become regular top-four contenders since his arrival.

The all-round quality of Tielemans in the middle of the park would make him the perfect candidate to shake things up in United’s holding role.

The likes of Fred and Scott McTominay have struggled to impress this season, with both players essentially anonymous during the 2-0 defeat at the hands of City on Saturday.

A move for Tielemans would provide an injection of some much-needed quality in the engine room, with and without the ball.

The 24-year-old also has plenty of room for additional growth, with his capture able to represent a long-term investment that will only increase in value if things go to plan.

Tielemans has excelled under the guidance of Rodgers and the latter is known to be a huge admirer of the Leicester midfielder, describing him as the ideal example of a top-level professional earlier this year.

“He has progressed into one of Europe’s top midfielders,” the Foxes boss told reporters. “He’s only going to get better. An incredible professional.

“His mindset is to work at the highest level. He’s progressing and that’s what you want to see in your players.

“It will come with even more experience, even more games. He’s one of the best professionals I’ve ever worked with.”

It remains to be seen whether Rodgers will look to bring Tielemans to United if he jumps ship to replace Solskjaer in the near future.

The midfielder certainly has enough quality to thrive at Old Trafford and is yet to sign a contract extension at Leicester despite months of negotiations behind closed doors.

However, in the event of Rodgers taking charge of the Red Devils, it would be hard to look past Tielemans as his clear first-choice transfer target ahead of the January window and beyond.
